The CIRM Annual Conference 2023 in Izmir served as a platform for exploring the maritime industry’s latest advancements in marine electronics, navigation, and communication. Navelink was honored to be part of this global gathering, contributing to discussions that uncovered the ever-evolving landscape of maritime technology.
Day One: Setting Sail with Key Addresses and Updates
The conference’s opening day commenced with a warm welcome from Richard Doherty, the Secretary-General of CIRM, followed by a keynote address by Ünal Hakan Atalan, Harbour Master, who emphasized the critical role of safe harbor management. Peter Broadhurst, Acting President of CIRM, shared insights into the organization’s vision, underscoring the importance of collaboration in driving maritime innovation.
Main developments in the maritime domain were unveiled during the day, with presentations from international organizations. Javier Yasnikouski from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) provided insights into IMO’s safety of navigation and radiocommunication matters. Philip Lane, representing the International Maritime Satellite Organization (IMSO), shared updates on IMSO’s role in shaping the future of maritime communications. Chris Hoffman, Chairman of the RTCM Board of Directors, delivered a comprehensive update on the Radio Technical Commission for Maritime Services (RTCM).
We are also proud to share that our own Head of Navelink, Anders Wendel, provided valuable insights into the pivotal role played by Navelink in advancing digitalization within the maritime sector.
Day Two: Delving Deep into Maritime Advancements
Day two witnessed a series of insightful sessions that showcased the maritime industry’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. Ejder Varol of iMarine Technologies Inc. shared Turkey’s expertise in Automatic Identification System (AIS) through key reference projects, underscoring the importance of AIS in ensuring safe and efficient maritime navigation.
Gudbrand Strommen from Kongsberg Maritime AS took the audience on a journey towards realizing Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS), highlighting the complexities and advancements in this transformative field. Grunde Løvoll from DNV Norway discussed the evolution from researching automatic navigation systems to establishing rules and standards, emphasizing safety and reliability in autonomous navigation.
S-100 developments were at the forefront, with presentations from various experts. Hannu Peiponen from Furuno Finland Oy provided the manufacturer’s perspective on S-100 Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS), while Paul Elgar from NAVTOR delved into S-100 from NAVTOR’s viewpoint. Svein Skjæveland of PRIMAR discussed the latest developments in PRIMAR’s S-100 initiatives, and the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) outlined the latest advancements in data standards for maritime charting and navigation.
Day Three: Closing with Insights and Collaborative Sessions
The conference’s final day was no less impactful, featuring crucial agenda items that encapsulated the essence of the event. Richard Doherty and Michael Richards from CIRM delivered vital technical updates, offering a glimpse into the latest technological advancements driving the maritime industry. Kim Fisher, representing the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), provided an illuminating update on recent work, highlighting IEC TC80 standards’ role in ensuring safety, efficiency, and interoperability of electronic equipment.
Chris Hoffman from ACR Electronics Inc. discussed recent Cospas-Sarsat updates and latest developments, showcasing the program’s critical role in search and rescue operations.
The afternoon brought interactive working group sessions, addressing critical aspects of the maritime industry. These sessions provided a platform for collaborative problem-solving and the exchange of ideas, highlighting the maritime industry’s commitment to continuous improvement and innovation.
As Navelink bids farewell to the CIRM Annual Conference 2023, we depart with a wealth of knowledge, new connections, and a deeper appreciation for the evolving maritime landscape. These three days have reaffirmed the industry’s dedication to innovation, safety, and sustainability.
